When visiting the author's website, read the biography and compose a summary of the author's life experiences using the BME (beginning, middle, end) strategy. When reading about the other selections the author has written, choose one and explain why you may be interested in reading that book. Next, when looking at the movies and the background information for them, explain how the cast came together for The Outsiders.
ReadingA variety of reading selections from across the genres are available under the Related Readings tab to accompany the novel study of The Outsiders.
There are also reading activities that will cross over into the writing assignments as open-ended responses, essays, or journals. The goal is to dove-tail critical reading and writing skills together as well as spiral the other genres into the novel study for constant text-to-text comparisons. |
WritingThe students will engage in Dialectical Journals and Reader Response Journals as the progress through the novel.
Open-ended responses will be used as formative assessments on the cross-genre related readings to strengthen the students' comprehension of the relationship between analysis and textual evidence. Various modes of essay topics are available to assist in making connections between the text and the real world or student experiences. A research project is also available to assist in creating prior knowledge for the students. |
