Non-Fiction Background on the Era and Extension Activity

Using NewsELA, Readworks, CNN Kids, TED Talks, or any other non-fiction resource, have students research gang violence, foster homes, runaways, poverty, and stereotypes. Once the students have found an article they are interested in reading that falls under one of these subject areas, have them print the article. They are to read and annotate the article for basic information on the topic; once that is complete, they are to compare and contrast the information in the article to the treatment of the subject matter in the novel. For example, an article explains the reasons behind children and teens choosing to affiliate themselves with a gang, so look for examples of how Hinton incorporates the reasons for the being in a gang with the characterization and conflict development.
